Our Story

From the wide skies of Western Australia come The Catherine Wheels — two soulful voices, two guitars, and a shared belief that it’s never too late to follow your passion.

At the heart of the trio is the talented guitarist and arranger Rob Thorpe, whose playing shapes their distinctive sound. He’s joined by Catherine Cary (guitar, vocals) and Cathy Mueller (vocals), weaving harmonies around songs that speak of love, family, aging, and resilience.

Their music is stitched from the fabric of everyday life — aching, laughing, remembering. With harmonies that rise like the sun over red dirt and lyrics grounded in truth, they sing not just for themselves, but for anyone brave enough to chase a dream.

Their debut album Karma Train (2022) launched a journey that continues to build, with a new release on the horizon. Regular performers on Perth’s folk and roots scene — including the beloved Lyrics Underground — they’ve also brought their music north to Broome on recurring tours.

The peoples choice at Port Lincoln's 2024 'Fame' awards and runners-up at the 2023 Nannup Folk Festival, The Catherine Wheels are living proof that passion has no age limit — and that real life sings best with grit, grace, and heart.

The Catherine Wheels put on a beautiful and well received 45min performance on Sunday morning 13th Oct 2024 at The Gidgestock Music Festival.

Looking around the festival audience, I could see that they were captivated by the presentation of original songs with lyrics that everyone could relate to. They presented their songs with interesting and humorous stories and performed them with musical skill and clear diction. Their harmonies were quite stunning and the accompaniment worked really well with one guitar laying down the chords and the other doing some amazing embellishments.

In addition to seeing the attention and enthusiastic applause of the audience I received highly positive comments from many people which is music to the ears of any musical director.  Well done The Catherine wheels.
